Metal Gear 2 on PC

Konami has confirmed that the PC version of Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance is due out in mid-March. While the PC version was announced at E3 2002, next to nothing has been heard about it since. What is known is that the PC version of MGS2: Substance will be quite similar to the Xbox game, and it will contain not only the story-based campaign from MGS2: Sons of Liberty, released for the PlayStation 2 at the end of 2001, but also the puzzle-based "VR" missions and other additional content. The PC version will support higher resolutions, but Konami hasn't released other details on how the game will differ from the Xbox version, if it will at all.

For more details, check out our previous coverage of Metal Gear Solid 2 for the Xbox and PS2.

Zelda Bonus Disc

Nintendo of Europe has clarified the bonus disc situation for the European version of Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker.

Unlike the US and Japanese release of the title, there will be no pre-order scheme for the bonus disc, which includes The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and the unreleased The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Master Quest. Instead the freebie will come directly with The Wind Waker when it's released on May 3. It will be dubbed a "limited edition", however, so it's still worth pre-ordering to be on the safe side.

The disc will also include footage of F-Zero, 1080: Avalanche, TimeSplitters 2, Phantasy Star Online, Rayman 3 and Super Monkey Ball 2.

New downloadable content for Splinter Cell

Ubi Soft has announced the pending arrival of new downloadable content for its best-selling stealth-action game, Splinter Cell.

On March 14, the company will be making available a brand new mission for Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell owners, exclusively downloadable through the Xbox Live subscription service.

The new mission, Kola Cell, is the first in a series of new content updates planned, and ties in with the story that pans out in the original game. Ubi Soft claims the mission will require use of Sam's best moves and gadgets to complete its four objectives.

"[Kola Cell] is an excellent example of what Xbox Live gamers expect from many of the hottest games on Xbox," said David Hufford, Xbox marketing manager.

GTA: Vice City confirmed for PC release!!

To the joy of PC gamers worldwide, Rockstar Games has announced the planned release of 80s crime simulation sequel, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City for PCs.

As with the PC version of Grand Theft Auto 3, Vice City for PC will have enhanced features, including improved graphics and sound, additional controls, and several options to customise the game.

"We felt that we had to truly outdo ourselves when it came to developing Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and felt that we owed it to the fans to continue to keep enhancing and delivering the gameplay, cinematic graphics, production values and audio experience that have become synonymous with the Grand Theft Auto franchise," said Sam Houser, president of Rockstar Games. "We are truly humbled by the response that the game has received so far and are extremely excited to showcase Grand Theft Auto: Vice City on the PC."

"The real beauty behind Grand Theft Auto is not only the freedom that it allows the players, but also the freedom that it has given us as developers," added Leslie Benzies, president of Rockstar North. "The open ended, non-linear world of Grand Theft Auto allows us to stretch the limits of our imaginations by giving us an open canvas to work with. This was especially the case when it came to creating Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. The 80's fashion styles, music, and sensibility fueled our creativity to the fullest. We are extremely excited for the PC world to experience the fruits of our labor when the enhanced version of the game is released this spring."

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City PC is due out in North America on May 13th and in Europe on May 16th.

Backyard Wrestling is unvieled

Eidos held an event this week to unveil in-development versions of its upcoming wrestling game, Backyard Wrestling. The game will contain the Backyard Wrestling license from the people responsible for the sometimes-gruesome video and Pay-Per-View series, which focus on extreme, no-rules wrestling between two usually self-trained performers. It will also contain the license to Insane Clown Posse's own personal wrestling league, Juggalo Championshxt Wrestling, or JCW, meaning that both Violent J and Shaggy 2 Dope will be playable in the game. Also appearing along with the rest of the JCW cast is former ECW maniac Sabu. Eidos is currently unable to confirm the game's final roster or the number of wrestlers that will be in the game.

The gameplay in Backyard Wrestling is still early, but what's currently in the game is definitely different from what you find in other wrestling games on the market, and it looks like it could come together quite nicely. The game puts the two wrestlers in a variety of hard-core wrestling environments. While we were only shown the game's mansion level, brief clips of a mall level and a more traditional backyard were also displayed.

The fast-paced gameplay appears to be a mix of the fast object interaction found in Capcom's Power Stone series and a more traditional rock-paper-scissors-based wrestling system. The control gives you two attack buttons to work with--one for picking up or throwing items and one for grappling--and you can use them to create a variety of combos for each character. There's no block button in the game, however. Instead, attacks will clash with one another depending on their priority. Strikes can cancel each other out, though a grab will, if timed properly, reach right through a series of strikes and put players into a grapple state. From the grapple state, you can execute a series of strike- and slam-based wrestling moves. Moves from the grapple state can be countered by a well-timed button press, with the timing indicated when the countering wrestler flashes. There are many other rules that apply to stunning wrestlers and breaking objects and how the wrestlers act when teetering high atop a level's many ledges, letting you set up lots of high spots and other dramatic high-damage moves. To climb objects you simply run into them--no button press is required. Overall, the game's mechanics seem well defined, are reasonably deep for the subject matter, and are easy to learn.

Graphically, the game appears to have potential, though the animation is currently in a pretty early state. The character models do a tolerable job of looking like their real-life JCW counterparts when examined up-close, but the fast-moving gameplay keeps the focus off the model quality and on the animation. The game currently has a pretty exaggerated set of animations, which at times give the game a slightly more lighthearted feel than you'd expect. Huge frog splashes from the top of a house down to the ground below cause both players to bounce off the ground upon impact, and the animation used when you Irish-whip someone through a board conveys a good sense of impact. The game is using an increasingly popular rag-doll-style physics engine, so the characters flop around pretty convincingly when being slammed into things. The version of the game we were shown sported a nice amount of blood loss on every solid hit, and blood will splatter around a bit, coating nearby surfaces. As expected, the Xbox version of the game has a slightly cleaner look than the PS2 version, though the PS2 version is currently a bit closer to completion.

The game's soundtrack is currently placeholder, but with the involvement of the Insane Clown Posse, you can expect that several of the wicked clowns' songs will appear in the final version of the game.

While Backyard Wrestling still has a bit of a journey to make before it reaches its scheduled summer release date, the game definitely has some interesting new twists on the wrestling genre, which should please anyone fed up with the current crop of wrestling games on the market. We'll have more on Backyard Wrestling soon. Check out new screenshots from the Xbox version here and new screenshots from the PlayStation 2 version here.

The game, which will be the first fishing game for the diminutive console, features a "deep interactive tackle box" with more than 36 lures, real pole action/response (kinky!), and an enhanced "live well" feature to track your catches.

"It's a very addictive game based on a simple premise: bass fishing," said producer Mike Bellhorn. "You can literally lose all track of time playing this game. Top Angler is visually impressive, the fish are fantastically rendered and their movement is unbelievably realistic."

The game is due to arrive for Nintendo Gamecube in spring, 2003.

Nintendo compensates John Menzies

Following fines imposed by the European Union last October, UK-based John Menzies PLC has won compensation from Nintendo totaling 7.5 million euros.

Following last October's fining of Nintendo and seven of its European distributors by the European Commission, John Menzies PLC (Nintendo's distributor for the UK) has won 7.5 million euros (a little under $8.1 million) from Nintendo in an out-of-court settlement.

Fines totaling 167.8 million euros were imposed last year when the European Commission found Nintendo and its European distributors guilty of colluding to maintain artificially high price differences in Europe. John Menzies was expected to pay 8.64 million euros toward the total figure, which it felt was excessive, since it had simply been following Nintendo policy.

Nokia N'Gages the handheld throne

Nokia drew the curtain up on its assault on the handheld market yesterday, with the official unveiling of its N-Gage machine.

N-Gage is effectively a mobile phone that also doubles as a powerful full colour games machine, capable of multiplayer gaming via Bluetooth wireless technology or "over-the-air" via mobile networks. Titles are sold through separate game cards and so far has large and important support from a number of high profile companies, including Activision, Eidos, Sega, Taito and THQ. Eidos and Sega will be creating a 3D Tomb Raider title and Sonic game respectively.

"The Nokia N-Gage brings the start of a whole new gaming experience to the market, with an ergonomic design optimised for playing games," said Anssi Vanjoki, executive vice president, Nokia Mobile Phones. "Nokia is working with world-renowned game publishers, including Activision, Eidos, Sega, Taito and THQ, and developers to provide an appealing and balanced catalogue of high quality games to the marketplace.

"Titles will include both the latest blockbuster games and a variety of titles across game genres," he continued. "The game experience can further be enhanced when network operators and service providers enter the value chain by providing game related mobile services such as downloadable game levels, additional features and game characters or even running online multiplayer games and communities. With these building blocks in place, the Nokia N-Gage platform will help to unleash the creative and innovative spirit of the games industry,"

N-Gage will also feature a digital music player (MP3/AAC), FM stereo radio, a comprehensive range of applications; e-mail and personal information management, and calendar synchronisation with PC, as well as USB for music file and application downloads. Battery life ranges depending on what's being used, but the figures for gaming are 3 - 6 hours (depending on game type).

The Nokia N-Gage is expected for late 2003. No price has been set yet. Games Domain will have more on this intriguing little machine soon.

The X-files to be reopened once again

This summer is going to be great for all console players who are also fans of the hit sci-fi series X-files.

Vivendi Universal and Fox have announced the release of X-files: Delirium/Resist or Serve, which is in development for PS2 and Xbox, but my hunch is that it will also be on PC and Gamecube by the end of the year, but don’t quote me on that.

This game is set to feature the likeness and voices of the show’s stars, David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson.

As well as that Blacks Ops Entertainment (designers of the game) have said the game will contain roughly three episodes worth of content and if that isn’t enough to make you’re mouth water then wait there’s more.

This game will take place in a town called Red Falls, and will involve the investigation of your typical ‘x-files’ murders, ghost sightings and other not so normal things. This game will eventually take you to a buried alien spacecraft (it wouldn’t be X-files without a alien spacecraft would it?) and a typical battle to save planet earth from being invested with little green men, although they may not be little or green for that matter.

They go on to say that they look forward to "delivering the most revolutionary service offering to hit the gaming industry in years". New console to be released

Now when there is a new console announced, there are generally certain things that accompany the release info, such as the specs of the machine, who developing for it and so on. But that hasn’t happened here, this new company who is delving into the "War of the Consoles" is called ‘Infinium Labs’ and has yet to mention what the specs are. And in a strange turn of events has made it clear to everyone, that no one is developing games for it at the moment. Although they have made clear that it is only online capable, and as the site boasts "there are currently 32,679 retail game titles available and 418 shareware game titles".

Now normally we here at Psychosis are not a sceptical bunch, but due to the fact that this console is to be released at the end of 2003. We have our doubts as to whether, this is a hoax or a genuine news release for a new competitor in the console race.

And the name of this machine you cry…wait for it…"Phantom".

We will let you decide if this is a hoax or if indeed it is a genuine announcement, all we know here at the Psychosis office, is that we have contacted Infinium Labs by email but as yet, they have yet to reply with an intelligible answer.

Batman to hit the consoles

You're walking down the street. Pitch black, moon overhead. Suddenly this guy comes jumping off the side of a building. Cape flowing, black mask, pointy ears. Most of us would shriek in terror, some would wonder who unlocked the gate at the loony bin, and a few would just stare in disbelief. In the real world, a superhero like Batman would do the daytime circuit with Dr. Phil and unravel all his deep, dark insecurities. But, in comics, he practically reigns supreme, the black knight of the dark sky. Movies, television - the guy has done it all.

So, hey, isn't it time he stars in a really great video game? Previous outings have been okay, but nothing that makes you stay up at night counting out your laundry money for the next Scott Peterson written comic. If Kemco has its way in a few short months, Batman: Dark Tomorrow will get our attention in a big way, exploding onto all three consoles with a vengeance.

Of course, the big change this time is that Peterson himself wrote the backstory so we can expect something dark and gritty. We spoke to the man himself for some comments.

"The always dangerous Gotham City is suddenly far more tumultuous and chaotic than its normally bizarre state," said Peterson. "Gang warfare has broken out, and Commissioner Gordon is missing. What's worse, all the signs point to someone from Arkham Asylum being behind the disappearance, and they find they're unable to establish contact with anyone in charge of the asylum."

Inevitably, this leads to a civic nightmare where psychotic criminals start escaping from the asylum and causing death and destruction on city streets. No green goblins here, flying around on airborne scooters. Screenshots show the underbelly of a city that is a marked departure from the happier, cheerful Gotham of the television series. The grittier feel is probably exactly what fans have been craving, and fits perfectly with the Devil May Cry, Metal Gear, and Splinter Cell tones of console gaming.

"Batman will incorporate stealth and detective elements that will be exciting to both gamers and core Batman fans," said Peterson. "He's been dark and grim and gritty since his first issue back in Detective Comics #27, September 1939. And while he got quite a bit lighter and campy later, culminating in the Adam West television show, the comics have had a darker tone again since 1970. Really, the game simply reflects the way the Batman has been in the comics for decades."

Of course, a superhero wouldn't have anything to do if not for all the escaped psychotic criminals wreaking havoc on peace-loving citizens. "There's Scarface and the Ventriloquist, a psychotic puppet who may be simply a way for his meek and mild-mannered handler to act out his innate aggression or who may in fact be alive in a supernatural sense," said Peterson. "There's the Ratcatcher, a psychotic former exterminator who's established a bond with the hordes of rats which infest Gotham. There's Killer Croc, a psychotic (sense a pattern here?) and enormous half-human/half-reptile creature who'd like nothing more than to feast on our hero."

More well known villains from the movies, also make appearances. " Poison Ivy, with her deadly touch and her unnatural control over all forms of plant life," Peterson continued. "There's Mister Freeze, who blames Batman for the death of his wife; he has phenomenal strength courtesy of the exo-skeleton which keeps him alive, as well as his freeze gun."

Peterson explained that even casual Batman fans will recognise many of these villains, although he has cooked up a few surprises for the hardcore fans. Gadgetry is also a hallmark of the comic series, and this time around, Batman will carry the usual Batarang, Batcable, Smoke Capsules, Batgrapple and other assorted utility items.

Game environments look... well, dark, but also a bit more grimy. Batman will be able to scale walls more easily (akin to his more insect-like friend, Spiderman) and run across rooftops. The action will take place in the usual warehouses, Gotham common area, the requisite sewer, and the asylum. Graphically, these locations will look much better than previous Batman games thanks to a new game engine that's been enhanced to crank out higher polygons and use cool lighting techniques (watch out Splinter Cell).

Peterson also spoke highly of the effort his team spent in developing Batman's cape. "The programming team has developed a great real-time cape program called B.C.S.R technology (Batman Cape Simulation in Real-time), which uses very complex physics to simulate Batman's cape." Kemco has said the cape will be a critical part of the game this time, used for blocking and tied to the force feedback on the controller.

Peterson also noted that the game will be exactly the same across platforms, and feature just one single-player story mode (no multi-player). Will the masked superhero really grab Gotham headlines for his console appearance? We'll have our final review in March when the game releases.

CES 2003: Splinter Cell PS2 impressions

We had our first chance to play Splinter Cell for the PlayStation 2 today at Dolby's CES 2003 booth, where the game is being demonstrated for its use of digital audio. The playable demo being shown is a short section of the game that allows you to use many of Sam Fisher's moves and gadgets.

The splash screen for the demo states that the game is still in development and will be released in 2003. Even in its current state, the game looks surprisingly good, although it's noticeably inferior to the Xbox version. The level of detail in the environments, characters, and objects is fairly decent, and the night-vision and thermal-imaging effects look about the same. The fantastic lighting effects seen in the Xbox version of the game look like they'll be at least similar in the PS2 version, albeit quite a bit less impressive.

The level available for play in the demo allows you to take Sam Fisher through a restaurant, where he has to deal with a couple of enemies and eventually make it up onto the roof. The level allows you to make use of many of Sam Fisher's moves, like using a pipe to climb up the side of a building, using a cable to slide from one building to another, and using weapons to dispatch enemies. The controls of the demo we played definitely worked well on the PS2 controller. The gameplay in its current state is responsive and seems to be very similar to the Xbox version's gameplay.

It'll be interesting to see how the final version of Splinter Cell for the PlayStation 2 turns out, especially after seeing this fairly promising demo. We'll have more on the game as we approach its release date.

Gameboy Advance 2

Nintendo has finally unveiled the new Game Boy Advance that has been under the shroud of rumor for so long.

At a pan-European conference, Game Boy Advance SP was unleashed for the gaming press, a pocket sized flip top version of GBA, boasting a integrated screenlight, new even-smaller dimensions (84.6mm from front to back, 82mm wide, and an 24.3mm thin), and a rechargeable lithium battery similar to those found in mobile phones, offering gamers over ten hours of continuous illuminated game-play. When the front light is turned off, the continual play increases to approximately 18 hours.

GBA SP will be available in three metallic finishes, silver, black and blue, and is totally compatible with GBA and Game Boy Colour titles. "With the launch of Game Boy Advance SP, Nintendo will be able to place their gaming expertise into the hands of new users who value outstanding design as highly as technology," said David Gosen, managing director, Nintendo of Europe. "There's an incredible range of games already available, and an ever-increasing number designed for players who may not have held a console since the days of Tetris. Following the incredible success of Game Boy Advance, this is a very exciting time for Nintendo and an exceptional start to 2003."

GBA SP will be released in Europe on March 28, for around 129-139 Euros (approx £100) while the US will get it slightly earlier in March for around $99. Japan gets its own version in February.

Gearbox's Randy Pitchford talks about his studio's progress on converting Bungie's Xbox shooter to the PC, adding Internet support in the process.

Bungie's Halo was originally intended for release on the PC and the Mac, but that was before Microsoft bought the studio, formerly based in Chicago, and released the game on the Xbox. As the top Xbox launch game, it would go on to outsell such PS2 exclusives as Metal Gear Solid 2 and the recent Final Fantasy games. So it was to the great surprise of Gearbox's Randy Pitchford when Microsoft told him last June that no one had been working on the much anticipated PC conversion of Halo.
Just shortly thereafter, in June or July, Gearbox received Halo's code and content and started working on Halo for the PC. That was also just around the time Gearbox stopped working on Counter-Strike: Condition Zero. At a recent workshop at the CPL's Winter Event in Dallas, Texas, Pitchford recounted that Gearbox quickly discovered why Microsoft hadn't already been tackling the conversion project, saying that it involves some tough problems that would have distracted Bungie from Halo 2.

The PC game isn't intended to change the single-player campaign in the slightest, so the challenges aren't creative, but technical. The first major hurdle has been to port the game engine to run on a PC. Although many think of the Xbox as a modified PC, Pitchford notes that the Nvidia graphics chip in the console is highly specialized, and since Halo was a first generation Xbox game, it doesn't deal with the hardware as elegantly as it could have.

Pitchford said that the project is about 40 percent done, much of which includes a successful port of the graphics engine. The port required Gearbox to move to supporting DirectX 9 and completely rewrite all the pixel shader effects. Part of what that rewrite means is that the PC game will have some enhanced effects for PCs with the latest graphics cards--Pitchford mentioned that Nvidia was helping with optimizations for the GeForce FX--that are more capable than the Xbox hardware. The game will also support cards down to the GeForce2 MX, and that has required designing some alternate effects. In particular, the flashlight effect had to be redone for low-end cards in order to keep the gameplay intact.

Gearbox is still planning its approach to the project's second major hurdle: support for Internet multiplayer. The Xbox game can handle up to 16 players in multiplayer, but only when four Xbox's are connected on a local network. The nature of the Internet means that action games with online multiplayer have to be designed to work with varying degrees of latency. However, the Xbox game's networking code sends data synchronously, which is only practical on a LAN. As a result, Gearbox has had to completely rip out the networking code and start from scratch.

Gearbox's creative focus is on the multiplayer, and the developer plans to include new maps, and may also add weapons and vehicles. It makes sense to design new maps considering that the PC game will more often be played with larger numbers of players in a server. It's likely to support 32 players per server. Pitchford mused that it might be possible to release a mod pack that would allow fans to create new levels for Halo, but said it's too early to tell. For various reasons, it's unlikely that PC and Xbox players will ever face each other in the game.

The PC version will feature a faithful port of Halo's acclaimed story-based campaign that won't be changed in any substantive way. However, conventional mouse and keyboard controls give PC players an advantage that would make the game too easy if the difficulty settings weren't rebalanced somewhat. Pitchford mentioned that the harder settings might need the most tweaking, since the legendary difficulty should still be terrifically hard. Bungie is working closely with Gearbox and has provided some insight on how to maintain the game's balance.

Gearbox has been involved with a number of smaller projects and conversions in the last year, including the PC versions of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 and James Bond 007: NightFire. According to Pitchford, this is a part of the studio's long-term strategy as it's been "gearing up for primetime," referring to a major unannounced game project. He mentioned that only 25 percent of Gearbox's staff is working on Halo. Nonetheless, the game is undoubtedly important for the studio, and Pitchford says it's scheduled to be out in the middle of next year.
